Here’s a breakdown of the Fast Food and Casual Restaurants closing in 2026.
Brands like Wendy’s (~320 closures) and Pizza Hut (~250) aren’t collapsing, they’re pruning. Underperforming locations are being cut so the rest of the business can run leaner and more efficiently. Fast food, in particular, looks less like it’s shrinking and more like it’s optimizing in real time.
Where things get more interesting is casual dining. Chains like Red Lobster and Denny’s are facing an even tougher environment with rising costs, shifting customer habits, and a middle-ground value proposition that’s getting squeezed from both sides. Door Dash and 3rd party apps are stealing parking spots for brick-and-mortar locations which drive the restructure. Meanwhile, Starbucks continues to play its own game, focusing more on experience and footprint refinement than large-scale cuts.
I have built this as part of my ongoing Claude Code learning journey.
