It is Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Happy Canada Day to our northern neighbors, who are spending it watching a heat dome settle over much of North America while AI data centers they may have opinions about consume electricity at city-grid scale. Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 this morning as the new default model for every free user on earth. Fable 5 is back. And the heat baking Boston, Washington, and the eastern seaboard right now is arriving at the exact moment power grid operators warned us about — the moment AI demand and human air conditioning demand peak simultaneously. Here is everything.

Fable 5 Is Still Dark

Claude Sonnet 5 launched today and is already running on your account whether you noticed or not

Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30 and made it the default model for every Free and Pro user starting today, July 1. If you opened Claude this morning and did not change a setting, you are already on it.

The one-sentence version: Sonnet 5 is the most agentic mid-tier model Anthropic has ever shipped, it performs close to the flagship Opus 4.8 on most everyday tasks, and through August 31 it costs less than the Sonnet 4.6 it replaced. The practical version: it can make plans, drive browsers and terminals, and complete multi-step tasks autonomously — work that, six months ago, required an Opus-class model to pull off reliably. On Terminal-Bench 2.1, Sonnet 5 scored 80.4 percent versus Sonnet 4.6’s 67 percent — a 13-point jump. On SWE-Bench Verified, it hit 72.7 percent against Sonnet 4.6’s 62.3 percent. On one knowledge work benchmark, Sonnet 5 actually edges past Opus 4.8. Early partners report it completes multi-step tasks where previous Sonnet versions would stall, and checks its own output without being explicitly asked to.

The pricing structure has a trap worth noting before September sneaks up. Introductory pricing runs through August 31: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output. On September 1 it steps up to $3 and $15 — the same sticker price as Sonnet 4.6. On paper that looks flat. It is not flat, because Sonnet 5 ships with an updated tokenizer that can convert the same text into up to 35 percent more tokens depending on content type. A workload that migrates to Sonnet 5 in July and looks cheaper will look meaningfully more expensive in September on the exact same traffic, while the rate card still reads unchanged. Anthropic set the introductory pricing to make the transition roughly cost-neutral against Sonnet 4.6. Roughly and temporarily are the operative words. Claude Fable 5 was restored globally on July 1 — nineteen days after the US Department of Commerce ordered Anthropic to take it offline. Anthropic’s newsroom announced the return alongside two things that did not exist before June 12: a joint jailbreak severity framework co-developed with Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, and an updated privacy policy requiring government-issued ID verification for access tiers above a basic usage threshold.

The jailbreak framework is the more significant structural development. Rather than each company independently deciding what constitutes a dangerous capability — the ambiguity that allowed the Commerce Department to issue a shutdown directive on a disputed interpretation — Anthropic, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have now published a shared scoring standard. It defines severity levels for jailbreak techniques, provides a threshold above which a capability is considered to warrant government notification, and creates a common vocabulary for the industry-government conversation that clearly did not exist in adequate form on June 12.

The hidden fingerprint story is a separate thread. Before the restoration, AI Weekly reported that Anthropic had quietly added steganographic Unicode markers to Claude Code outputs — invisible characters embedded in generated code designed to identify whether the output had been used to train a competing model. The technique is Anthropic’s technical countermeasure against the adversarial distillation campaigns it accused DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, and Alibaba of running. A heat dome is sitting on top of America’s most AI-dense corridor and the grid math is not comfortable

The timing is not symbolic. It is physical. A dangerous heat dome is intensifying across the central and eastern United States this week, with temperatures expected to exceed 38 degrees Celsius — 100 degrees Fahrenheit — from Boston to Washington through Thursday. Grid operators are warning that electricity demand could approach record levels before the Fourth of July weekend. The holiday marks the 250th anniversary of American independence. It is arriving with the electric grid under a strain that has no historical precedent.

The reason the precedent does not exist: AI data centers. CNBC reported this week on the specific thermodynamic problem that makes heat waves categorically different for the current grid than for any previous generation of infrastructure. Cooling already accounts for roughly 40 percent of a data center’s energy consumption at normal temperatures. When ambient temperatures rise, cooling demand inside the facility rises at the same moment that air conditioning demand from the surrounding population rises. Five gigawatt-scale data centers — each drawing power equivalent to a large nuclear plant — are expected to come online in 2026 alone, per Epoch AI. PJM Interconnection, the largest US grid operator serving 65 million people across 13 states, projects a six-gigawatt shortfall against reliability requirements in 2027. That shortfall is being driven primarily by data center load growth. The heat dome settling over that same geography this week is not a future scenario. It is the stress test arriving on schedule.

The insurance industry is tracking this as a financial exposure, not an abstract risk. Zurich Insurance’s Head of International Construction told CNBC that severe weather now drives a third of the company’s losses in its US data center builders’ risk portfolio — up from a background exposure level three years ago. The company has $3 billion in assets with more than a mile of exposure to extreme weather events. Many data centers are moving to suburban and rural areas where land is cheaper and weather records were sparse because those areas were largely undeveloped. Sparse weather records are not the same as low weather risk. The AI infrastructure buildout is discovering this in real time.

California deployed AI across its entire state government and it is already the largest government AI deployment in US history

While the rest of the AI industry was processing Fable 5’s return and Sonnet 5’s launch, California quietly finalized the largest government AI deployment in American history. The state signed a contract covering AI tools — primarily Claude — across its entire government operation at a per-seat cost approximately half what comparable enterprise deployments have cost other large organizations. Governor Newsom framed it as a competitiveness play: the same AI tools that power private-sector productivity are now running inside state government, and at scale that no other US government has matched.

The California deployment covers agencies ranging from the Department of Motor Vehicles to the Department of Public Health, with use cases including document processing, policy research, public-facing services, and internal administrative workflows. The half-price cost structure reflects California’s negotiating leverage as a buyer of a size that very few customers can match. The state has a larger economy than most countries. When it commits to an AI platform at full government scale, it gets prices that individual enterprises cannot.

The precedent this sets is more interesting than the deployment itself. California is the most consequential AI policy jurisdiction in the United States. Its AI bills are currently moving through the legislature with a July 2 adjournment deadline. A state government that is itself a major Claude enterprise customer has a direct financial stake in how those bills are written and which AI companies they affect. That dynamic will shape the California AI legislative session in ways that are worth watching closely.
